Our Town: Recreation is a way of life for Tahoe man

Anthony Davis Donning his signature Goofy hat, Anthony Davis works tirelessly for local youths, including his countless hours coaching track.

Anthony Davis, in his words, is a "reckie" with passion, and his involvement with recreation on many levels makes it a very accurate moniker. Born April 30, 1964, in Columbus, Ohio, Davis graduated from high school in Sacramento and attended California State University, Sacramento, for three years. When he started college, he planned to become a secondary school teacher and coach, but switched his major to recreation. He was an active participant in track and field in high school and college.

In 1986, some friends from CSUS invited Davis to come to Tahoe to work for the summer. He started as a change person at Harveys Resort Casino but soon went into surveillance, where he worked from 1987 to 1989. He left Harveys to work as a custodian for Lake Tahoe Unified District from 1989 to 1994, and it was during this time that he also coached as a volunteer at South Tahoe Middle and South Tahoe High schools for Austin Angell. This is when his coaching career began.

In 1994, Davis was selected as the first athletic coach at Lake Tahoe Community College in the history of the school. He coached cross-country for two seasons and won the Golden Valley Conference Championship in 1995.

Davis has been at Kahle Community Center since 1995, where he is a recreation specialist and community service coordinator. He loves the job, and it fits him perfectly. He works for the Tahoe Township Justice Court with its alternative-sentencing program and finds projects for people who have been ordered by the court to perform community service. He participates with anything involving recreation, from programs mostly for youths as well as those for adults, and helps staff the front desk. He also does minor building maintenance and refinishes the basketball court every year.

In addition to his job at Kahle, Davis owns A-K Entertainment, a mobile DJ service, and provides music for weddings, youth dances, South Tahoe High School's Sober Grad Night and Kahle's annual Father/Daughter Dance.

He also has started Anthony Davis Sports Tahoe, a track-and-field program that brings quality track-and-field meets to the South Shore. The purpose of the business is to bring events into the community to provide fitness and performance development training programs. Davis shares his expertise and passion in the sport of track and field with different organizations and school groups such as the Kids College Track & Field class, the Lake Tahoe Marathon and his favorite event , the South Shore Fourth and Fifth-Grade Track & Field Classic.

Davis enjoys participating in track-and-field events on any level. He is a USATF official and has been selected to work as a volunteer greeter for coaches and athletes at the Olympic trials in Eugene, Ore., for two weeks in June. He also enjoys music and entertaining folks as a DJ. He is partial to R&;B and Motown, but also likes country. He enjoys the outdoors and Lake Tahoe and has been a member of the South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club since 1997. Here is how he answered the Tribune's questions:

1. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED AFTER YOU DIE?

"I would like to be remembered as a good person."

2. WHAT IS SOUTH LAKE TAHOE'S MOST PRESSING ISSUE TODAY?
"Gosh, there are so many. But, I guess the main one for me would be opportunities for under 20-year-olds in terms of recreation."

3. IF YOU COULD CHOOSE ANY AMERICAN CITIZEN TO BE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, WHO WOULD IT BE?
"I would say Austin Angell, because as my Tahoe mentor he provides the leadership and attitude for me and everyone to be a good person."

4. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT?
"Music, by far. I also enjoy dancing and going to good concerts."

5. IF YOU COULD CHOOSE ONE THING TO DO OVER IN YOUR LIFE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
"Life has been so good to me that I can't think of anything I would want to do over to change any of my past experiences."

6. WHAT LIVING PERSON DO YOU MOST ADMIRE?
"Austin Angell and my sister, Leslie Peace. She has always been there for me and supported me in everything I do. I especially admire her because she volunteers to operate the food court at the Lake Tahoe Marathon."

7. WHAT HISTORICAL FIGURE DO YOU MOST ADMIRE?
"John Carlos, the track-and-field Olympian at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. He stood up for his rights and the rights of other African-American citizens."

8. IF YOU COULD SPEND AN HOUR WITH ANYONE IN THE WORLD, WHO WOULD IT BE?
"I would like to spend that hour with my kids - Derek, 24, Malcolm, 18, and Chloe, 14. I would like them to really understand who I am as an individual, and to share with them my ideas of how to become good people in their futures."

9. WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE: WIN AN INDIVIDUAL GOLD MEDAL OR A PULITZER PRIZE?
"There is only one answer - win an Olympic gold medal in track and field."

10. WHAT ISSUE IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES HAS CAUSED THE COUNTRY THE MOST EMBARRASSMENT?
"The treatment of our soldiers when they return home from war. I believe our country should do a better job assisting veterans back into our civilian society."
